Abstract
Judge Gerald Heaney served for forty years as a federal judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit. While serving in this capacity, he worked with Judge Martin Donald Van Oosterhout (1900-1979) from Orange City, Iowa. In 1993 Heaney published, “Biography: Judge Martin Donald Van Oosterhout: The Big Judge from Orange City, Iowa,” for the Iowa Law Review. This collection contains the compiled research for this article. Included are Van Oosterhout family history, letters of recommendation (copies) for Van Oosterhout’s appointment to the U.S. Court of Appeals, estate & probate (copies), correspondence (original) with former law clerks and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackmun, newspaper clippings on Van Oosterhout’s cases as well as Heaney’s written article.
