Abstract

Island3 (Cluster I1) and Sbash (Cluster I2) are Mycobacteriophages that have a high degree of genetic similarity—especially in the region of their genomes that include genes for structural proteins. Because their structural proteins appear so similar, we hypothesized that antibodies raised against Island3 would cross-react with Sbash and vice versa. To test our hypothesis, we immunized female BALB/c mice with phage high titer lysates or filtered M. smegmatis (control), collected serum, and used the antibodies in ELISA and Western Blot assays. We observed less cross-reactivity than we expected.
