The artifacts in this display were collected by Dr. Lyle Vander Werff. Vander Werff attended Northwestern Junior College, Hope College and Western Seminary, Princeton Seminary, and received his Ph.D. from the University of Edinburgh. He served as a pastor in the Reformed Church in America, was an R.C.A. missionary in Kuwait, and was a professor of religion at Northwestern College for 31 years. He also founded and directed the International Student Program at Northwestern College.
Dr. Vander Werff visited the Holy Land four times. In 1962, Lyle and his wife Phyllis lived in Jerusalem for one month and studied under Keneth Cragg, a British Anglican pastor, scholar, and author. In 1975, Vander Werff was the director of a seminar tour in the lands of the Bible. He visited and lectured in Rome, Jerusalem, Nazareth, Beirut, Athens, and the Biblical churches of Asia minor. In 1977 he was the photographer for an archaeological excavation team in Amman, Jordan. His final trip was in 1979 when he was a director of a study tour in the lands of the Bible touring Egypt, Jordan, Israel, and Greece.
The Vander Werff family donated the collection to Northwestern Archives in June 2018.
