In 1959, Northwestern broke ground for a new men's dormitory, and it was ready for occupancy by fall 1960. The original project provided room for 80 students and was designed for the possibility of expansion. The addition was ready by fall 1963.

The name of the dormitory, Colenbrander Hall, was selected to honor Rev. Henry Colenbrander, the president of the Board of Trustees from 1926 to 1960.

In December 2024, Colenbrander was razed. Before the building was taken down, the time capsule was excavated and opened; the documents from the time capsule are included in the Documents folder.
