Abstract

In Jonah and the Giant Fish, a show produced for children ages five to ten, Jonah, a servant of God, struggles to decide if he should listen to God's call or not. Using sound we tell this violent story to kids with enough pathos so they understand the gravity of the situation but not too much that they are overwhelmed and want to leave. Using the beautiful, artistic power of sound design, the world comes to life and sparks the imaginations of children.

This was my first time designing for a show and I entered my design into the KCACTF (Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival) Regional Sound Design Competition and I tied for first place. I had to defend my design to the judges as they asked questions about why I made the choices I did. This was a little nerveracking because the judges are people who do some form of technical theatre for a living.

Sound Design for Jonah and the Giant Fish
