Abstract

The following is a presentation of the ensemble costumes of Northwestern's 2019 production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime directed by Drew Schmidt. These costumes were designed and executed by Rachel Smart with execution assistance from head designer and costume shop manager Amber Huizenga.

The ensemble cast for this production contained seven actors and twenty-eight costumes in grays-cale. Therefore, careful consideration in the execution of this design was lent towards creating costume changes that were significant but simple, adding meaningful touches of color into the design, and creating accurate and appropriate costumes for UK police officers. This presentation details how these concerns were addressed during the design process, describes the necessary research for said process, and showcases examples of costume renderings and the final products.
